Cordless drill

A battery-powered cordless drill.

The cordless drill is the one power tool almost every project needs. It drills holes and drives screws, and the clutch ring stops the screw at a set torque so it doesn’t strip or sink too deep. Set it low for small screws and soft material and raise it for larger ones. The videos here use a drill for everything from hinge screws to shelving and decks.

Pick the right bit for the job and a sharp one: twist bits for wood and metal, masonry bits for concrete. For long screws and lag bolts, an impact driver is faster; see cordless drill vs impact driver. Wear eye protection, and clamp small work.
