Drywall knives, also called taping knives, are the wide steel blades used to apply and smooth joint compound. A narrow one presses tape and fills, and a wide one feathers the edges so the patch blends into the wall. The videos here use them for hammer-sized holes, mesh tape patches, corners and testing a Level 5 finish.

Apply thin coats, let each dry, and sand lightly between them. Keep the blade clean and the edges straight, because a nick in the blade leaves a ridge in the mud. Several thin coats beat one thick coat every time. Our drywall repair guide helps you choose the patch, and patch a hole in drywall shows the steps. See also drywall.
