Non-contact voltage tester

A non-contact voltage tester is the first tool to pick up for any electrical job. Hold the tip near a wire or outlet slot and it beeps or lights if the conductor is live. The videos here use one before replacing switches, outlets and a disposal, and compare it with other testers.

Test it on a known live circuit first, so you know it works, then test the circuit you plan to touch. A quiet tester is not proof that a wire is dead: shielded or buried wires can fool it. For a firm answer, confirm with a multimeter. Always shut off the breaker too. See replace an outlet and replace a light switch, and the basic tool kit guide.
