Fix it, build it, learn it.

Build a shed

A shed build goes in order: foundation, floor frame, walls, roof, then siding and trim. The videos here include a floating foundation on concrete blocks, framing a lean-to against another building, plywood walls, a metal roof and interior wall finishing. Our shed to workshop project and lean-to shed project follow two builds from start to finish.

Before you buy lumber, check your local rules. Many places set a size limit for sheds without a permit, a minimum distance from property lines and rules for electrical power. Call your utility locator before you dig. A circular saw and an impact driver do most of the work. Metal roofing edges cut, so wear gloves, and use fall protection on any roof.

A lean-to is one of the simpler sheds to build. One wall already exists, so you frame three walls, a ledger board and a shed roof.

Mike Montgomery of Modern Builds starts with a shed that has decent bones but a lot of problems: a worn floor, a wall and door close to falling off, a failing roof and nothing inside.
