Fix a leaky faucet
A dripping faucet is usually one worn part. Which part depends on the faucet:
- Two-handle compression faucets use rubber washers that wear out.
- Single-handle and most modern faucets use a cartridge, or a ball or ceramic disc, that you replace as a unit.
The steps are the same either way. Shut off the water at the valves under the sink, open the faucet to drain it, plug the sink so small parts can’t fall in, then take a photo at each step as you take it apart. Take the old part to the store to match it, or look up the faucet’s model.
If the faucet leaks from the base or the body, or parts aren’t available, replacing it is often the better job. See Replace a kitchen faucet. If the drip is in the shower, see Replace a shower cartridge. Related: Faucet drips and the Plumbing system.
