Replace a shower cartridge
When a single-lever shower goes cold or will not shut off, the cartridge is usually worn. Replacing it is a job you can do without opening the wall. The video here swaps the cartridge in a 1960s single-lever valve: shut off the water, remove the handle and trim, pull the old cartridge and match it exactly to a new one.
Take the old cartridge to the store, because many look alike and a wrong one will not seal. If the valve body itself is corroded or the handle is stuck, plumbing shows other repairs, and a plumber may be the better call. Once finished, run the shower and watch for leaks at the wall plate.
