Fix a garbage disposal
Before anything else: turn the disposal off, and never put your hand inside it. The manufacturer’s instructions say to use tongs or pliers to remove objects.
Match the fix to what it’s doing:
- Hums but won’t spin: it’s jammed. Use the hex wrench in the centre of the bottom of the unit to free it, take out the object, let the motor cool and press the reset button.
- Completely silent: press the reset button, then check the breaker, the wall switch and any GFCI outlet it’s plugged into.
- Runs but drains slowly: the clog is in the trap or drain below it. See Unclog a drain.
- Leaks from the body: replace the unit.
Our guide garbage disposal humming or not working walks through each case step by step, with the manufacturer’s procedure and the list of things never to put in. Related: Garbage disposal hums or won’t turn on.
