Build a deck
A deck is a framing project that sits outdoors, so layout, footings and fasteners matter. The videos here include a floating ground-level deck, a composite deck and a two-level deck with hardwood boards and a railing. Start with the simplest design you can: the lower and less attached to the house, the fewer rules and risks.
Permits generally apply to attached or raised decks and to railings. Footing depth follows your local frost line, so ask your building department rather than guessing. See do you need a permit?. A circular saw and an impact driver do most of the work. A ledger attached to the house, and any guardrail, are the parts to have inspected or done by a pro.
