Deck and patio

A deck is a framing project: footings, a frame, joists and boards. The videos here build several kinds, including a floating deck on concrete blocks, a ground-level composite deck and a two-level deck with hardwood boards and a railing. Ground-level floating decks are the easiest to start with.

The rules change as a deck gets higher. Decks that are attached to the house, raised off the ground or fitted with railings generally need a permit and inspection, and footing depth depends on your frost line, so ask your local building department. Check do you need a permit? first, and wear eye and ear protection with a circular saw.
