Living room

The living room is where a house gets its finish work. Built-in shelves, a fresh coat of paint and a clean drywall patch change the room more than new furniture does. The videos here show how to paint a room in the right order, build built-in bookshelves and patch a hole in drywall so it disappears under paint.

Most of this work is beginner to handy: a stud finder for anchoring shelves, a cordless drill and patience with the prep. Read our drywall repair guide before you cut anything. If a wall holds wiring or you plan to move a switch, turn the breaker off and test the circuit first.
