Toilet won’t flush

Start with the simple cause: a clog. Use a flanged plunger, seal the drain opening and push and pull steadily. The videos here compare plunging with a bucket and a closet auger, and show soap and hot water as a gentler first try.

If water stays in the bowl, the siphon jet may be clogged with mineral buildup, or the tank may not be releasing enough water. Open the tank and check that the flapper lifts. Our guide to plunger, snake or drain cleaner helps you choose. See also unclog a toilet.
