Door won’t close or latch

Doors fail in a few ways, and the videos here cover the common ones. A door that rubs or sticks on the jamb is often sagging on loose hinges; see fix a sticking door. A door that closes but bounces back has a latch and strike plate that no longer line up, which is a door that won’t latch.

Always start with the hinges, because the top hinge screws loosen first and pull the door out of square. Tighten them, or use longer screws that reach the stud. Then check where the door touches. Chalk or lipstick on the edge shows the contact points. Sand or plane only where it rubs.
